Jubilee Strawberries and Strawberry Bread Recipe

I was recently invited (along with a lovely group of bloggers and a journalist) by the nice folks at Cirkle to travel to Kelsey Farm and check out their fruit-growing operation. The day was hot and sunny and perfect for the trip.

The charming Paul Kelsey himself took the day to show us around and show us the entire operation from picking and packing to distribution.

Paul Kelsey

I was really impressed with the entire operation, but more importantly I really liked that the fruit pickers are treated really well. They are paid well and the living area and recreation areas were a bit of home.

The way that the strawberries are grown was innovative and in a manner that made it easy for the pickers to pick the strawberries.

The aroma the berries gave off was amazing, and more amazing was the size and taste of the berries. I ate large ones, small ones, heart-shaped ones and they were all gorgeous and the best strawberries I have ever eaten. They taste the way you remember them tasting when you were a kid. They are Driscoll strawberries, a reminder for me of home. Now one thing Paul told me that surprised me was that the season lasts from May – October. I like to eat fresh and in season produce, so this made me very happy indeed.

We got to pick our own strawberries to take home and create with. Next we were off to lunch for a strawberry themed meal.

Pimms, don't mind if I do

We started the lunch with Pimms made with Jubilee strawberries of course. Then we moved outside to eat lunch in the glorious sun.

Strawberry starter

I won’t bore you with a run down of the lunch, suffice it to say that every course did include strawberries and we were very well fed.

After a lengthy lunch, we collected our strawberries and we taken home.

A massive thank you to Paul, Sam and Jodie for taking such good care of us, I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

I have a list of things to create with the berries, but decided to start with jam and strawberry bread. I topped the bread batter with some jam then swirled in and then baked. If you want more Jubilee Strawberry recipes, check out the Jubilee Strawberry website.
